Vertical video has one shape and three different sets of rules, and the rules change every few months. This is the current (2026) picture for the three places Indian businesses post most, and the settings that survive each platform's compression.
The one format that works everywhere
- Resolution: 1080 × 1920 px (9:16 portrait). Not 4K; every platform re-encodes to 1080p or lower, and starting from 4K only gives the platform more to crush.
- Frame rate: 30 fps. 24 and 60 are accepted; 30 is the safe default.
- Codec and container: H.264 video, AAC audio, MP4. This is what the platforms transcode from most cleanly.
- Bitrate: 6–10 Mbps for 1080p. Higher is wasted; lower starts to show in motion.
- Audio: 128 kbps stereo AAC.
Export this once and it works for Reels, Shorts, Status, YouTube community posts and LinkedIn vertical video.
Platform specifics
Instagram Reels
- 9:16, 1080 × 1920. Instagram shows a 4:5 crop in the feed grid, so keep text and faces inside the central 1080 × 1350 area.
- Length: up to 3 minutes (as of 2026; the cap keeps moving, check the app).
- File size: up to around 4 GB, which you will never reach at 1080p.
- Instagram re-encodes everything; a clean 8 Mbps upload comes out looking better than a 40 Mbps upload.
YouTube Shorts
- 9:16 (also accepts 1:1), up to 3 minutes.
- Same export as Reels. YouTube keeps higher quality than Instagram, so a 10–12 Mbps file is worth it here.
WhatsApp Status
- 30 seconds per clip; longer videos are split automatically into 30-second parts.
- WhatsApp compresses hard. Export at 1080 × 1920 or 720 × 1280 with a moderate bitrate (3–5 Mbps) so the file is small before WhatsApp touches it.
- Sending a video in a chat (not Status) has a similar re-encode; sending it as a document avoids compression but loses the inline preview. The 16 MB "limit" people remember is the old media cap; current versions allow much larger media but still compress it. For a sharp file to a client, send as a document under 100 MB.
Why uploads come out cropped
A 16:9 landscape video posted as a Reel is either letterboxed with black bars or auto-cropped to the centre, cutting off whatever was at the sides. Resize it yourself first, choosing what to keep:
- Fill & crop (zoom in and crop the sides) for talking heads and products in the centre.
- Pad (black or coloured bars) when the full width matters, such as a floor plan or a wide property shot.
- Blur-pad (the video in the middle over a blurred copy of itself) looks more polished than black bars; the video resizer offers fill, pad and stretch, and the Reels/Shorts/Status preset sets 1080 × 1920.
A browser workflow, no software installed
- Trim to the clip you want with trim video. "Fast (no re-encode)" cuts at keyframes instantly without any quality loss; "Frame-exact" re-encodes only when you need an exact frame.
- Resize to 1080 × 1920 with the Reels preset, choosing fill-and-crop or pad.
- Convert MOV, MKV or WebM to MP4 with the video converter if the source is not MP4; it copies the stream without re-encoding when the codec already fits, so this step is instant and lossless for most iPhone and Android footage.
- Compress to a target size with the video compressor if the file must be small: 16 MB for WhatsApp-sized sends, 25 MB for e-mail.
Every step runs on your device using the browser's hardware video encoder, so a 200 MB clip does not have to be uploaded anywhere first. Chrome, Edge, Brave and Safari 17+ have the WebCodecs support this needs.
For real-estate teams
Property walk-throughs are shot landscape and posted portrait, which is where most of the cropping damage happens. Shoot portrait when the clip is destined for Reels or Status, or shoot landscape and keep the subject in the centre third so a fill-and-crop keeps it. A 3D floor plan render with a title badge, panned slowly as a 15-second portrait clip, makes a Status post that gets replies; render it square or portrait from the 2D to 3D converter and pad it to 9:16.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best resolution for Instagram Reels?
1080 × 1920 px (9:16), 30 fps, H.264 in an MP4 container, AAC audio. Instagram re-encodes everything, so upload a clean 1080p file rather than a 4K one that gets crushed harder.
Why is my WhatsApp Status video blurry?
WhatsApp compresses Status videos aggressively and limits them to 30 seconds (longer clips are split). Uploading a 4K file makes it worse: WhatsApp downsizes and re-compresses in one pass. Export at 720 × 1280 or 1080 × 1920 at a moderate bitrate first.
Does MOV work for Reels?
The app accepts MOV from iPhones, but MP4 (H.264) is safer, smaller and plays everywhere. Convert MOV to MP4 before posting from a desktop or sending to a client.
How long can a Reel be?
Instagram allows Reels up to 3 minutes for most accounts as of 2026 (the limit has changed several times; check the app). Shorts are up to 3 minutes. WhatsApp Status clips are 30 seconds, longer videos are split into parts.
