HEIC explained: why iPhone photos won't open on Windows, and what to do
What HEIC is, why Apple uses it, why Windows, Android, portals and printers choke on it, how to convert HEIC to JPG in the browser without installing anything, and the iPhone setting that stops the problem at the source.

Drop the HEIC files, get JPGs, nothing installed. Up to 50 at once, ZIP download, runs in your browser. Free.
Convert HEIC to JPG → Opens HEIC to JPG · runs in your browser
Someone AirDrops you a photo, or you copy your iPhone's camera roll to a laptop, and the files end in .HEIC and refuse to open. This is what the format is, why it exists, and the fastest way out.
What HEIC is
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the file format Apple has used for photos since iOS 11 in 2017. Inside is an image compressed with HEVC, the same codec as 4K video. The result is a photo about half the size of a JPG at equal quality, with support for 16-bit colour, live photos, bursts and depth data in one container. For Apple it is a sensible choice: smaller files, better photos, free storage saved on every phone.
For everyone else it is a compatibility problem, because HEVC is patented and most non-Apple software does not ship the decoder.
Where it fails
- Windows 10 and 11: Photos shows a blank or an error until you install the HEIF Image Extensions from the Store (sometimes paid, depending on the PC maker's licence).
- Older Android phones: the gallery shows a broken thumbnail.
- Government and exam portals, job sites, insurance claims, visa applications: reject anything that is not JPG/JPEG or PNG.
- Most printers and photo kiosks.
- E-mail attachments to someone on Windows: they get a file they cannot preview.
- WordPress and many CMSs: upload refused or no thumbnail.
- Old versions of Office, Photoshop and GIMP.
Three ways out
1. Convert the files you already have. Drop them into the HEIC to JPG converter. It decodes HEIC in the browser (nothing is uploaded, nothing installed) and gives you JPGs at the quality you choose, 50 files at a time with a ZIP download. For a transparent or lossless result use HEIC to PNG; for a document use HEIC to PDF.
2. Stop the iPhone creating them. Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible. From then on the camera saves JPG (and H.264 video instead of HEVC). The trade-off is roughly double the storage per photo.
3. Let the iPhone convert on the way out. Settings → Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC → Automatic converts HEIC to JPG when you copy via cable. Sharing via Mail or WhatsApp also converts automatically; AirDrop and iCloud Drive do not.
Quality and size after conversion
A 12 MP HEIC of around 1.5 MB becomes a JPG of 2.5–3.5 MB at 90% quality, or about 1.5–2 MB at 80%. Nothing visible is lost at either setting. If the JPG then has to meet a form's limit, the converter's companion image compressor takes it to an exact KB target; the two steps can be done in one pass by choosing JPG plus a target size.
HEIC files store the photo's orientation as a flag rather than rotating the pixels. A good converter reads the flag and rotates the JPG so it does not come out sideways; if yours came out sideways, the converter ignored EXIF orientation.
Live Photos, bursts and depth
A Live Photo is a HEIC plus a short MOV. Converting the HEIC gives you the still frame; the video part is a separate file. Portrait-mode photos carry a depth map that no JPG can hold; the converted JPG is the finished portrait, which is what you want. Burst photos convert one by one.
When to keep HEIC
If you live entirely inside Apple devices and iCloud, HEIC is the better format: half the storage, better colour, and everything opens it. Convert only what leaves that world: forms, Windows colleagues, printers, websites. The converter is for the copy, not the original.
Frequently asked questions
Why does Windows say it can't open my HEIC photo?
Windows needs the HEIF Image Extensions (and often the HEVC Video Extensions) from the Microsoft Store to show HEIC. Without them, Photos shows an error or a blank. Converting the file to JPG avoids the install entirely.
Does converting HEIC to JPG lose quality?
A little, in theory: JPG is a lossy format. At 85–90% quality the difference is invisible on a screen and in print at normal sizes. The JPG will be 1.5–2 times bigger than the HEIC.
How do I stop my iPhone taking HEIC photos?
Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible. New photos are then saved as JPG. Existing HEIC photos stay HEIC until converted.
Can I upload a HEIC photo to a government portal?
Almost never. Indian portals ask for JPG or JPEG (sometimes PNG). Convert to JPG first and check the KB limit, which is usually 20–200 KB for photos.
