Marketplaces reject or bury listings whose images break their rules, and the rules differ just enough between Amazon, Flipkart and Meesho to catch sellers who use one set of photos everywhere. Here is what each one asks for as of 2026 (requirements change, so confirm your category in the seller help pages before a bulk upload), and a free workflow to produce compliant images from phone photos.

The common ground

All three want the same thing from the main image: the product alone, on a plain white background, sharp, well lit, filling most of the frame, with no text, logos, watermarks, borders or props. All three accept JPG; most accept PNG. All three reward high-resolution images because zoom works and conversion improves.

Amazon.in

  • Main image: pure white background (RGB 255,255,255); product fills 85% or more of the frame; no accessories that are not in the box; no mannequins for most categories (clothing has its own rules).
  • Size: longest side at least 1,000 px for zoom; 1,600 px or more recommended; maximum 10,000 px.
  • Format: JPEG preferred; also TIFF, PNG, GIF (non-animated). sRGB or CMYK colour.
  • File size: up to 10 MB.
  • Additional images: up to 8, backgrounds and lifestyle allowed; text allowed for infographics.

Flipkart

  • Main image: white or light plain background for most categories; product centred; no text or watermarks.
  • Size: minimum roughly 500 × 500 px; 1,000 × 1,000 px or larger recommended; square images display best in the grid.
  • Format: JPG or PNG.
  • File size: a few MB per image; category-specific limits apply.
  • Category rules (fashion, electronics, furniture) specify the number of images and which views are mandatory; the seller hub lists them per vertical.

Meesho

  • Main image: plain background, product clearly visible; white preferred, light backgrounds accepted in many categories.
  • Size: at least 500 × 500 px; square or 3:4 portrait works best in the app grid.
  • Format: JPG or PNG.
  • File size: keep under 2–5 MB; the app compresses heavily anyway.
  • No contact details, prices or watermarks on images; Meesho removes listings for it.

A workflow from phone photo to compliant image

1. Shoot. Daylight from a window, product on any surface, phone at the product's height, not above it. Fill the frame. Shoot every side the category requires.

2. Remove the background. Drop the photos into the Cortex background remover. It runs a segmentation model in your browser (nothing is uploaded), cuts the product out automatically, and gives you keep/erase brushes for edges it got wrong (handles, straps, hair). Set the background to white for marketplaces, or transparent PNG if you also want the cut-out for your own site. A soft drop shadow helps products that look like they are floating.

3. Crop to fill 85%. Square crop for Amazon and Flipkart, 3:4 for Meesho if you prefer. The photo editor crops to a preset ratio and lets you straighten.

4. Resize the batch. Bulk resize to 1,600 × 1,600 for Amazon and Flipkart (or 2,000 × 2,000 if the originals allow), 1,000 × 1,000 for Meesho, fit mode "Pad (white)" so nothing is cropped. Fifty images at once, ZIP download.

5. Keep the size sane. JPG at 85–90% quality lands at 300–800 KB for a 1,600-px image, well under every limit and fast to upload. The image compressor sets a target if a category has a strict cap.

6. Name the files. SKU-01-main.jpg, SKU-02-back.jpg. Bulk uploads match on filename.

Mistakes that get listings suppressed

  • Off-white or grey backgrounds on the main image (shoot on white and still remove the background; "white" paper photographs grey).
  • Product too small in the frame.
  • Text or price on the main image.
  • Watermark from a free online background remover.
  • The same photo upscaled from 400 px: it passes the size check and fails the zoom.
  • A border or rounded corners added by an app.

Privacy and volume

A catalogue is hundreds of images, often of products not yet launched. Tools that upload every photo to their server for background removal are slow at that volume and keep copies. Running the model in the browser is faster for a batch and keeps the catalogue on your machine, which is the reason the Cortex tools are built that way.

Frequently asked questions

Does Amazon require a white background?

For the main image, yes: pure white, RGB 255,255,255, with the product filling 85% or more of the frame and no props, text or watermarks. Additional images can show lifestyle shots and backgrounds.

What image size does Flipkart need?

Flipkart's guidelines ask for a minimum around 500 × 500 px and recommend larger (1000 × 1000 or more) for zoom, in JPG or PNG under a few MB. Requirements change by category; check the seller hub for your category before a bulk upload.

Can I use a phone photo?

Yes, if it is sharp, evenly lit and the background is removed cleanly. Most catalogue photos on Indian marketplaces are phone photos with the background replaced by white.

Will removing the background online leak my product photos?

If the tool uploads them, they sit on someone's server. The Cortex background remover runs the model in your browser, so the photos never leave your device.
