Under 2 MB in one click, text stays selectable. Light mode keeps the text layer so ATS systems can still read it. Nothing is uploaded. Free.

Portals reject resumes for file size more often than for content, and they do it silently: the upload button spins, nothing happens, and the deadline passes. Here are the limits that matter in India, why a plain two-page resume can weigh 8 MB, and the five-minute fix.
The limits
| Portal / use | Accepted formats | Size limit (check the portal, these change) |
|---|---|---|
| Naukri | DOC, DOCX, RTF, PDF | 2 MB |
| LinkedIn (Easy Apply) | PDF, DOC, DOCX | 2 MB |
| Indeed | PDF, DOC, DOCX, RTF, TXT | about 2 MB |
| Most company career portals (Workday, SuccessFactors, Taleo) | PDF, DOC, DOCX | 2–5 MB, sometimes 1 MB |
| Government recruitment portals | PDF, often scanned certificates too | 100 KB–1 MB per document |
| E-mail to a recruiter | Gmail 25 MB, but under 1 MB is courteous |
The pattern: 2 MB is the common ceiling, and government portals go much lower.
Why a two-page resume is 8 MB
Text weighs nothing; a two-page resume with no images exports at 50–150 KB. The weight comes from:
- Your photo, placed as a 4,000-px phone picture and displayed at 3 cm. It keeps its full size inside the PDF.
- A scanned signature at 600 dpi.
- Template backgrounds: the designed templates on Canva and similar tools often carry a full-page image or texture on every page.
- Embedded fonts: a template that uses six weights of a display font embeds all six.
- Exporting at "high quality print" instead of standard.
The fix, in order
1. Shrink the photo before placing it. Resize it to about 300 × 400 px with the image resizer (there is a passport-size preset), then insert that. The PDF drops by megabytes.
2. Export properly. Word: File → Save As → PDF → Options → "Minimum size (publishing online)". Google Docs: File → Download → PDF is already compact. Canva: Download → PDF Standard, not PDF Print.
3. Compress the PDF in light mode. Drop the file into the Cortex PDF compressor and choose Light. It re-encodes oversized images and strips extras while keeping the text layer intact, which matters because applicant tracking systems read that layer. Never use medium or strong for a resume: they turn pages into pictures, which an ATS cannot read.
4. Check the text is still selectable. Open the result, drag across a line. If it highlights, parsers can read it.
5. Convert DOCX to PDF when a portal wants PDF, with the Word to PDF tool, which keeps fonts and layout as rendered on your device. Keep the DOCX too; some portals want it.
For government applications
Separate documents, separate limits: photo 20–50 KB, signature 10–20 KB, each certificate 100–500 KB, in the exact pixel sizes the notification states. The guide on photo and signature sizes for government forms has the common ones. For certificates, scan at 150 dpi greyscale and use the compressor's "To a size" mode with the KB the portal asks for; for several pages of one certificate, merge them into one PDF first.
A checklist before you apply
- PDF, under 1 MB, text selectable.
- Filename
Firstname-Lastname-Resume.pdf, notfinal_v3 (2).pdf. - Photo only if the role or country expects one (most Indian corporate portals do not need it; many government ones require it).
- Fonts that exist on every computer (Calibri, Arial, Georgia) if you must send DOCX.
- One version per portal: the DOCX for Naukri's parser if it mangles your PDF, the PDF everywhere else.
- Your resume never uploaded to a random "free converter" that keeps files; the tools above run in your browser and keep nothing.
Frequently asked questions
What is the resume size limit on Naukri?
Naukri accepts resumes as DOC, DOCX, RTF or PDF up to 2 MB. If yours is over, it is almost always an embedded photo or a high-resolution logo; compress the PDF or remove the photo.
Should I upload a PDF or a Word file?
PDF, unless the portal insists on DOCX. A PDF looks the same on every device; a DOCX reflows and can break. Make the PDF from the original document, not by scanning a printout.
Will compressing my resume break ATS parsing?
Not if you use light compression, which keeps the text layer. Medium and strong modes turn pages into images, which look fine but cannot be read by applicant tracking systems; never use those for a resume.
Why is my resume PDF 8 MB?
A phone photo of you embedded at full resolution, or a scanned signature at 600 dpi, or a template with a full-page background image. Resize the photo to about 300 × 400 px before placing it, and export the PDF at standard quality.
