HEIC to JPG on iPhone: convert, or stop shooting HEIC

HEIC saves space on the phone and causes trouble everywhere else: forms reject it, Windows asks for an extension, WhatsApp Web will not preview it. There are two separate jobs: converting the photos you already have, and stopping the phone from producing more.

Quick answer. For photos you already have, open HEIC to JPG on this site in Safari or Chrome on the iPhone (or on any computer), select the photos, and download the JPGs; the conversion runs on the device and nothing is uploaded. To stop future photos being HEIC, go to Settings → Camera → Formats and choose Most Compatible; the camera then saves JPG. To keep HEIC on the phone but send JPG to a Mac or PC, set Settings → Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC → Automatic.

Step by step

  1. Convert existing photos: open HEIC to JPG, tap Choose images, select up to 50 photos from the library, download the JPGs (or a ZIP) to Files.
  2. Share from Files or upload to the form directly from the download.
  3. Future photos as JPG: Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible.
  4. Prefer HEIC storage but JPG when transferring: Settings → Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC → Automatic.

Tips that save a second attempt

  • Most Compatible also records video as H.264 instead of HEVC, which plays on more devices and in more editors.
  • Converting on the phone works but a laptop is faster for a large batch; the same page runs on both with nothing uploaded.
  • If a form also wants a KB limit, use the size pages (compress image to 50 KB and so on); HEIC input is accepted there too.
  • Share sheet → Copy Photo and paste into Mail produces JPG on recent iOS versions, a one-off workaround when you cannot change settings.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting lose quality?

HEIC to JPG at Best quality is visually lossless for photos. Choose a lower quality only when a file-size limit requires it.

Why do some apps already show JPG?

iOS converts on the fly when an app asks for a compatible format. Browsers and file pickers often do not, which is why HEIC appears in uploads.

Will Most Compatible use more storage?

Yes, JPGs are roughly 1.5 to 2 times the size of HEIC for the same photo. On a 128 GB phone it is rarely a problem.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. Resizing and compression run in your browser on your own device. Nothing is sent to a server and nothing is stored.
