2D vs 3D floor plans: which one to use, and when
A 2D floor plan and a 3D floor plan show the same home, but they answer different questions. The 2D plan is a measured document; the 3D plan is a furnished picture. Most projects need both, and the mistake is usually using one where the other was needed.

Quick answer. A 2D floor plan is a scaled top-down drawing with walls, openings and dimensions; it is the document architects, engineers and approvals work from. A 3D floor plan is a furnished, lit, top-down view of the same layout; it is what buyers understand at a glance. Use 2D for anything that must be measured or approved, 3D for anything that must be sold or explained. With Cortex you can produce the 3D from the 2D in about a minute, keeping the layout identical, so you never have to choose.

Step by step
- Start from the 2D plan. It carries the geometry and the printed sizes; everything else is derived from it.
- Decide the audience. Engineers, vastu consultants and approval bodies need the 2D; buyers, tenants, family members and social media need the 3D.
- Produce the 3D from the 2D, not separately. Upload the plan to 2D to 3D Floor Plan, pick a style, render; the walls and labels are kept, so the two agree.
- Publish them together where you can: the 2D for the technical page or the area statement, the 3D for the lifestyle page, the listing card and WhatsApp.
Tips that save a second attempt
- A 3D plan is a presentation image, not a measured drawing. Quote sizes from the 2D plan; the 3D copies the printed labels but is not a scale document.
- If your 3D plan and your 2D plan disagree, buyers notice at the site visit. Generating the 3D on top of the 2D avoids this; redrawing from scratch does not.
- For comparisons between layouts, render all of them in the same style; the differences in the plans become obvious once the drawing style stops varying.
- A clean 2D in a consistent style matters too. Floor Plan Redraw gives a sketch, scan or old brochure plan the same drawing style as the rest of your set, free.
Frequently asked questions
Is a 3D floor plan the same as a 3D walkthrough?
No. A 3D floor plan is a single top-down image of the furnished layout. A walkthrough is an animated or interactive model you move through. The floor plan takes a minute and costs a few rupees; a walkthrough is a studio project.
Do approval bodies accept 3D floor plans?
No. Sanction drawings, RERA documents and agreements use measured 2D drawings. The 3D is for marketing and explanation.
Can I get a 2D from a 3D?
Not reliably from a render. Keep the original 2D plan; if you only have a poor scan or photo of it, Floor Plan Redraw produces a clean 2D from that.
What does a 3D render cost?
The first render is free with an account. After that a 2K Lumen render is 25 credits (₹12.50 at ₹0.50 a credit), 4K is 55 and the premium Atlas engine is 60. Restyling, recolouring, backgrounds and titles in the Studio are free.
